5 rounds into the 2016 Cùchulainn Road League season and we make our first visit to the challenging and often reviled Flagstaff circuit.
The Bike Station League’s very own Tour de France style Mountain top finish! This circuit definitely saves the best until last, with the climb of Flagstaff coming at the very end. The sense of “doom” of the climb hangs over the entire race and slower speeds are often seen as the riders head out towards Carlingford and Omeath, as they try to converse energy.
However the circuit also has a kicker in Carlingford, with the steep hill out of the village. The Flagstaff climb itself begins immediately as the riders turn left at Davy’s Pub. The first section is extremely steep, which is made all the harder by the rough road surface. Further up a right turn sees the general steady climb to the finish which ensures the field is ripped to pieces, with riders finishing the 39.7km in ones & twos.
