Dundalk riders in France, National Championships and Tech Free Time Trial

Cuchulainn Cycling Club went old school for the latest round of the FPM Accountants Summer Cycling League with a "Tech" free 10mile time trial. The race against the clock banned the use of the pointy aero dynamic helmets, slippery fast time trial bikes and wheels developed by NASA to cut through the air like a knife through hot butter. It was a race for the purists. Strangely the usually dominate time trialists were absent and the unlikely winner of the time trial was Stamullen's Gary Gorman. Gary put over a minute into another visitor, Newry's Kevin Lynch with Cuchulainn's Sean Loghran in 3rd only 2 seconds behind Lynch. Richard Murphy and Karl Dolan rounded out the top 5.

The league is nearing it's end with only 3 rounds remaining, 2 road races and the hill climb on August 30th, which will also double up as the Louth Hill Climb Championships. Ray O`Shaughnessey is leading the table and would be expected to defend his hill climb award on Jenkinstown at the end of the month. The 2 remaining road races are flat affairs where his competitors will need to score maximum points to wrestle away the league crown.

The club's trip to the France proved a great success. Jimmy Flynn, a previous visitor to the Alps, lead the way on many of the climbs but closely followed by Annette Dawe, Ray Fedigan and Aimhirghin O`Brannagain. Jason Boyle once again showed what he is made of, topping his previous exploits on the Mizen to Mailn and Tour of Scotland trips by sailing up the famous Tour de France Cols, such as Alp D`Huez and Col  de Galibier. Meanwhile Terry McEneaney showed that his success in the off road league has transferred over to the road as he negotiated the climbs with skill and panache! Niall Clarke not content with just doing the club spins entered a local non competitive sportive and spent 10hours in the baking sun tackling what most have included every climb in the mopuntain range.Once again the rider's tipped their collective hat to Padraig Kelly for organising an excellent trip and surely he is already planning ahead for 2013.

Following on from the successful staging of the Bull Run in Bellurgan Park the club is hosting another National Championship event on the weekend of August 18th/19th with the running of the Juniors and Vets Time Trial and Road Race Championships. There will be quite a few medals up for grabs and most noteworthy competitor will be junior Ryan Mullen. Recently Mullen took a silver medal at the Junior European Time Trial Championships in Zeeland, Holland. He is the defending junior National Champion and will be keen to reclaim his crown at Dundalk over the weekend.
