Round 11: Carrick Circuit (56.9k)

23 June, 2016 - 19:00
.
Oriel - Carrick - Ardee - Dorians - Fane. 56.9k.

“…Its ok guys, Long Womans Grave circuit is over, you can come out now…”

Round 11 and it’s off to Carrickmacross we go, leaving from Oriel Park, heading for Ardal O’Hanlon’s hometown, before turning southbound onto the exposed N2 en route to Ardee, heading across the equally exposed Ardee Link Road. Turning left at Dorians pub leaves just shy of 10k to the finish line at the Fane Bridge.

At 56.9k, extended from last year to finish at the Fane for safety reasons, it is our longest route this season and with a primarily flat profile, should result in good average speeds and some PR’s for Strava segment chasers.

William Loughlin (Armagh Down) with his recently acquired maillot jaune, looks set to hold onto it after some impressive climbing from Davey’s last week to take 4th place in Race 1 extending his lead to a sizable 16 points from Cùchulainn’s own Alan Bingham. The top 3 places in Race 1 all came from different clubs but from one Race Group (4); Andrew McAfee (White River Wheelers CC) leading the way, followed by Patrick Gorman (Ardee CC) and Jonathan Carroll (Armagh Down CC).

Race 2 saw Mickey Laverty (Cùchulainn CC) and Brian Grogan (White River Wheelers CC) freewheeling across the finish line as if on a Sunday spin, neither seemingly wanting to take the 10 points for fear of being promoted to Race Group 4. Nevertheless, taking the 10 has assured Mickey of promotion, with Brian in 2nd place and determined ride from Niall Clerkin (Cùchulainn CC) saw him take 3rd place and the accompanying 8 points.

Now into the business end of the League, team tactics are coming into play and with 4 different clubs represented in the Top 6, the long 56.9k circuit this week is going to put these tactics to the test.
